Senior Software Engineer (Trust)

Beneath a simple yet elegant user interface lies a complex system of functionalities. Our AI-powered product uses advanced image recognition, facial verification, face recognition, facial anti-spoofing (liveness detection), and behavior analysis to make identity decisions. We help our partners build onboarding processes that ensure good people get things done and bad folks get stopped. But knowing who someone is only gets you halfway. The next question is whether they can be trusted — and answering it means checking a person's identity data against the authoritative sources that hold the truth. Every country does this differently: a different registry, a different database, a different set of rules about what can be checked and how. To take our platform to the next level, we're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Trust team. This team builds and operates the services that validate a person's identity data against country-specific authoritative sources — government registries, national databases, AML and sanctions screening — and turns that patchwork of very different upstreams into a single, dependable trust signal our customers can act on. Alongside sibling teams like Trust Registries and Trusted Documents, your work directly determines how many countries we can cover, how fast we can launch a new one, and how much our partners can rely on the answer we give them. YOU'LL HELP US PROTECT HONEST PEOPLE ONLINE BY: • Designing, building, and operating Trust's backend services — the integrations with external identity data sources and the validation logic on top of them — with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and maintainability • Expanding our global coverage: onboarding new countries and data sources quickly, and building the abstractions that make the next integration cheaper than the last one instead of more expensive • Modelling messy, inconsistent upstream data into consistent, well-defined verification results — including the matching and validation rules that decide whether the data actually belongs to the person in front of us • Making our systems resilient to upstreams we don't control — timeouts, retries and idempotency, backpressure, circuit breaking, graceful degradation, backwards-compatibility testing, SPOF elimination, and end-to-end monitoring of every provider we depend on • Handling sensitive personal data responsibly, with regional data residency and compliance requirements designed in from the start • Participating in on-call rotations, incident response, and postmortems to ensure our most critical checks stay healthy • Driving engineering quality through code reviews, CI practices, runbook documentation, and mentoring teammates YOU ARE THE RIGHT FUTURE VERIFFIAN FOR THE JOB IF YOU HAVE: • 5+ years of experience building large-scale backend applications with Python, including event-driven and async architectures with message queues (e.g. SQS, RabbitMQ, or similar) • Hands-on experience integrating with third-party APIs at scale — and a healthy respect for what happens when they're slow, flaky, undocumented, or quietly change their response format • Proven ownership of production-critical services — you understand what it means to be on-call and take reliability seriously • Deep experience designing for resilience in distributed systems: idempotency, retries, backpressure, timeouts, backwards compatibility • Strong data modelling instincts — you can turn heterogeneous, inconsistent external data into a clean domain model that holds up as the number of sources grows • Strong understanding of modular design approaches and SOLID principles • Hands-on experience building scalable, maintainable APIs • Proficiency in a range of testing strategies that ensure robust and reliable software, including testing against external dependencies you can't fully control • Solid understanding of relational database fundamentals • Familiarity with structured logging and observability practices • Strong communication skills — you can clearly articulate technical ideas to engineers and non-engineers alike, and work comfortably with Product, Compliance, and external data providers NICE TO HAVE • Experience with identity verification, KYC/AML, financial services, or government/registry integrationsExperience working under data privacy and regulatory constraints (GDPR, regional data residency) • Event-driven systems, workflow or orchestration engines, or Kubernetes You can get familiar with our tech stack on StackShare . Why Veriff? We are the preferred identity verification platform partner for the world’s most innovative growth-driven organizations helping conveniently verify and safeguard users anywhere in the world. We support the broadest number of identity documents from nearly every country and territory in the world - and this is continually increasing! About the Team OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. Achieving this requires effective engagement with policymakers and the broader communities impacted by AI. Our Global Affairs team builds authentic, collaborative relationships with public officials and the wider AI policymaking community. We work to ensure that insights from policymakers and external stakeholders inform OpenAI’s work and, in collaboration with colleagues across the organization, support the development of thoughtful regulation, industry standards, and the safe and beneficial development of AI. About the Role As the Policy and Partnerships Lead CEE & Baltics, you will develop and lead OpenAI’s public policy and partnerships strategy across Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics as part of our broader European team. You will determine where OpenAI should engage most deeply, develop differentiated country strategies, and connect national political and policy dynamics with OpenAI’s broader European and global objectives. You will build trusted relationships with governments, regulators, public administrations, civil society, business, research institutions, and other influential stakeholders, while identifying practical, high-impact opportunities to demonstrate how AI can contribute to economic competitiveness, public-sector modernization, education and skills, security, resilience, and broader societal benefit. You will also serve as an important bridge between national capitals and Brussels, surfacing regional intelligence, assessing where national debates may influence Europe-wide outcomes, and translating OpenAI’s European priorities into locally credible strategies and engagement. This is a senior, high-ownership role at the intersection of public policy, government affairs, and partnership building. You will work closely with colleagues across Global Affairs, Legal, Communications, Product, Safety and Security, Partnerships, and Go-to-Market, and report to the Head of EU Member States Policy & Partnerships. Warsaw is the preferred location for this role. Exceptional candidates based elsewhere in Central and Eastern Europe or the Baltics may be considered, subject to employment feasibility. We offer relocation assistance to new employees. The role will involve frequent travel across the region, periodic travel elsewhere in Europe and occasional travel to the US (approximately three times per year). In this role, you will: • Develop and execute OpenAI’s public policy and partnerships strategy across Central and Eastern Europe and the Baltics, identifying priority markets, issues, and opportunities for engagement. • Build and maintain trusted relationships with senior policymakers, regulators, public administrations, civil society organizations, researchers, business leaders, and other influential stakeholders. • Develop differentiated country strategies that reflect local political, economic, and regulatory dynamics while advancing OpenAI’s broader European and global priorities. • Lead engagement on key AI and technology policy issues, helping shape policy environments that support the safe and responsible development and deployment of AI. • Identify and develop partnerships, programs, coalitions, and initiatives that translate OpenAI’s mission and policy priorities into tangible regional impact. • Monitor political, legislative, and regulatory developments across the region, surface emerging risks and opportunities, and provide clear strategic recommendations to internal stakeholders. • Serve as a bridge between national capitals and Brussels, helping connect national policy developments with EU-level debates, regulation, and implementation. • Represent OpenAI in senior-level meetings, industry forums, conferences, and other public and private engagements. • Prepare OpenAI leaders for engagement with policymakers and external stakeholders, including developing briefing materials, policy positions, and strategic recommendations. • Work cross-functionally with Legal, Communications, Product, Safety and Security, Partnerships, Go-to-Market, and other teams to develop and execute coordinated strategies. You might thrive in this role if you: • Have deep knowledge of the political, institutional, and technology-policy landscape across Central and Eastern Europe and/or the Baltics, with meaningful credibility in at least one priority market. • Have an established network and experience building trusted relationships with policymakers, regulators, civil society, and other senior stakeholders. • Understand EU policymaking and the interaction between Brussels-level policy, national politics, regulation, and implementation. • Bring strong technology-policy judgment and an understanding of issues relevant to AI, such as privacy, data, competition, copyright, product safety, and consumer protection.
