Software Architect

Remote
A

Job Requisition ID # 26WD94957 Position Overview At Autodesk, we are pioneers in 3D design, engineering, and entertainment software, building tools that empower some of the most creative minds on the planet to solve real-world problems. Recognized by Fortune, Forbes, Glassdoor, and others as a top place to work, we are dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive workplace where innovation and creativity thrive. Autodesk's Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) Data organization is seeking an experienced Software Architect to join the AEC Data team and define the cloud-native services and distributed-systems architecture that power the AEC Data Model (AECDM) and the many services around it. Data is the domain, but the role is fundamentally one of cloud and services architecture — APIs, service contracts, integrations, distributed-systems design, and the connected data model that ties them together — spanning multiple teams. It is not a data-warehouse or analytics-specialist role. The AEC Data organization is building the foundational data infrastructure behind Autodesk's vision for connected construction: the platforms, services, and unified data models that span the entire built-asset lifecycle, from design and construction through operation and maintenance. This work enables the continuous flow of AEC data (3D models, 2D drawings, issue tracking, cost, sensor streams, and more) across Autodesk products and third-party integrations. The architect will help shape the next generation of capabilities for the Autodesk Forma Industry Cloud, collaborating with software architects, domain experts, and product teams across Revit, Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, and Autodesk Forma. This is a senior individual-contributor role on an established architecture track, reporting to the Distinguished Architect of the AEC Data team, who also serves as the Lead Software Architect. The primary responsibility is to shape how multiple teams design and build — through standards, reference architectures, ADRs, and design-review governance — rather than to own a single service. The exact focus flexes to your strengths and organizational need. Responsibilities • API Design & Evolution : Design and evolve API surfaces across the AEC Data services — resource modeling, addressing, versioning and backward-compatible evolution, query APIs, and unifying overlapping surfaces into a single coherent contract. • System Architecture : Define and evolve cross-team, cloud-native architecture across the AEC Data services; design distributed systems including service contracts and event-driven flows. • Schema Design & Evolution : Design, document, and evolve data schemas for AEC domain entities (buildings, infrastructure, spaces, systems, components, relationships) — including semantic models, property sets, classification systems, and relationship hierarchies. Own versioning, backward/forward compatibility, deprecation, and migration; maintain the schema registry, validation rules, and quality checks. • Standards & Governance : Establish standards, reference architectures, and reusable components; author architecture proposals and decision records (ADRs) for review by a cross-org architecture council, and run cross-team design reviews. • Prototyping & Feasibility : Evaluate alternative architectural directions through modeling and prototyping, de-risking key decisions before broad adoption. • Mentorship & Technical Leadership : Mentor engineers and fellow architects on emerging and established technologies and on architectural practice; grow technical depth across teams. • Reliability & Performance : Ensure reliability, security, and performance of systems; define SLOs and drive observability (metrics, tracing, logging). • Communication : Communicate architecture with clear views and diagrams (e.g., C4) and executive-ready narratives; produce comprehensive documentation and onboarding materials. Minimum Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or equivalent experience. • 10+ years designing cloud-native, distributed systems, including 5+ years at cross-team architect altitude (Software Architect, Principal Engineer, Staff+, or equivalent). Title is flexible; scope of impact is the primary consideration. • Deep expertise in cloud services (ideally AWS), API/service design, and distributed-systems patterns (microservices, event-driven, resilience). • Solid grounding in data modeling and schema design — including schema definition languages (e.g., JSON Schema), versioning, and backward/forward-compatibility and evolution strategies — as applied both to standalone data schemas and to API contracts. Specialist data-warehouse or analytics architecture is not required. • Excellent knowledge of software design and architecture patterns. • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive alignment across teams outside the candidate's direct …

Type: Full-time contractor Location: Remote (Europe/Africa time zones) Language: Fluent, professional-level English Travel: None expected OpenFn is a Digital Public Good for public service automation and AI orchestration. Our platform automates data exchange and workflows, helping governments and NGOs connect fragmented systems and deliver essential services across health, humanitarian response, and government programmes. Open Function Group , the platform’s primary steward, is a small, fully remote team of engineers, integration specialists, solution architects, and implementation consultants working across 15+ countries. We build infrastructure that helps governments function, clinics operate, and people access the services they depend on. The role Connecting two government systems should get easier every time. Today, it often means starting again: negotiating access, configuring environments, and deciding who can trust whom. Each new connection becomes another project. We’re hiring a Staff Back-End Engineer to help change that. You’ll join our Connections squad, with a clear mission: make it dramatically cheaper for government departments to collaborate. Your work will turn the hard parts of each integration into capabilities teams can use again and again. You’ll define how organisations connect their systems and share credentials, and build the workers that execute their workflows reliably at scale. As OpenFn grows to support everything around those workflows, from setup to monitoring and reporting, you’ll contribute significantly to the architectural direction of our backend. You’ll have the opportunity to make substantial technical contributions and the responsibility to see them through. Most of your time will be spent in the codebase, with design discussions, code review, and written proposals helping the team build on your work. This is an individual contributor role with no people-management responsibilities. Our stack is Elixir/Phoenix and Node.js. You’ll need Node.js experience; you can learn Elixir here. What you’ll do Ship production features • Deliver features end to end, from technical proposal to production. • Build the squad’s core capabilities: connected-system registration and governance, credential ownership and sharing, and high-performance workers that execute workflows reliably at scale. Shape OpenFn’s backend architecture • Set architectural direction across OpenFn’s backend, including module boundaries, service interfaces, naming, and conventions. • Establish consistent patterns that help engineers navigate and extend the codebase, including when using AI development tools. • Set engineering conventions through code review, documentation, and your own work. Strengthen platform security • Translate security findings into architectural changes and carry them through to production. • Strengthen trust boundaries, isolation, and credential handling. Requirements What you’ll bring • 8+ years of experience building and operating backend services for customer-facing products. • Experience designing backend service architectures, not only extending existing ones. • Experience building backend services with Node.js. • Experience operating services where reliability and scale have direct consequences for users. • The ability to work independently and collaborate across time zones in a small, distributed team, using GitHub, Slack, and written proposals. • Clear, professional communication in English and the ability to work effectively across cultures. Useful additional experience • Elixir/Phoenix or other languages and frameworks designed for functional programming or concurrency. • Developer tooling or large migration programmes. • Securing production systems. • Work in health, humanitarian response, government digital transformation, or the wider social impact sector. • Working proficiency in Spanish or French. Benefits Compensation and benefits • Compensation based on experience, following OpenFn’s Equal Pay for Equal Work framework. Our NGO and government customer base means we don’t offer Silicon Valley pay scales; we aim to provide fair, transparent, and competitive pay. • Flexible working hours. • Fully remote work, with team meetups across Europe and Africa. Our last three were in Kigali, Cape Town, and Dakar. • Significant influence on the platform’s architecture and the opportunity to help shape our technical strategy. • The opportunity to build open source software that helps ensure everyone worldwide can get access to great digital public services.

What you’ll do • Build and operate LLM-powered internal solutions, tools, and automations end-to-end • Ship customer-facing AI features • Drive technical decisions from design through production rollout • Own systems in production, including monitoring, reliability improvements, and incident response participation • Build and maintain LLM evaluation workflows, including quality/safety checks, baselines, and regression detection • Partner with R&D, product, and security teams • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and patterns, and advocate adoption when justified What we’re looking for • Strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on ownership of production systems; Python required • Solid LLM application development experience, including context design, structured outputs, and orchestration • Hands-on experience with LLM evaluations, including experiment design, regression detection, gating, and observability • Experience building and operating backend services/APIs in production • Experience designing multi-service architectures and reliable integrations, including stable service contracts, retries, and failure recovery • Working knowledge of operating production databases, including schema design, indexing, migrations, and backup/restore • Hands-on experience with containerized workloads • Ability to balance output quality, latency, and cost in production AI systems Nice to have • Experience with agentic systems or RAG, including evaluation • Experience building lightweight user interfaces • Experience shipping high-adoption internal developer or operations tooling • JavaScript/TypeScript • AWS deployment and operations experience • Experience with runtime isolation and sandboxing for sensitive execution • Experience in B2B SaaS, security, compliance, or data governance contexts Technology we use You do not need to have experience with every tool listed below, but this is the environment we work with now: • Python, uv, FastAPI, PydanticAI • PostgreSQL, Docker, Docker Compose • AWS: EC2, ECR, S3, Lambda • Interfaces and tooling: Streamlit or similar tools, pytest, ruff, pyright, OpenTelemetry What We Offer: • Fully remote work, giving you the flexibility you need in the modern world • A collaborative environment encouraging you to own your domain and implement best practices • Stable income, benefits, flexible working hours, and opportunities for promotion. • Friendly and professional peers, eager to help and help you grow. • A multitude of interesting challenges and opportunities.
