Get matched for freeA side job is any paid work alongside your main job, your studies or family work. In Germany there are three common forms. First, the mini-job: in 2026 you earn up to €603 a month, and next to a main job subject to social insurance exactly one mini-job with a different employer stays a mini-job and is not added to your main job. Second, a second employment above that limit: it is taxed under tax class VI, which leaves out the basic tax-free allowance, and social insurance contributions apply; if two employers deduct wage tax from you at the same time, you usually have to file a tax return. Third, freelance or self-employed work: you invoice for it, for example for AI training, writing or translation, and usually declare the income in your tax return. Which form a role has is stated in each listing.
Check your employment contract first: many contracts require you to report a side job in advance or get it approved, and you should follow that even for a small one. An employer can usually only forbid it where its legitimate interests are affected, for example work for a competitor or a side job that hurts your performance in the main one. With several employments, the working hours are added up: the limits of the German Working Hours Act and the rest periods apply to all jobs together. If you receive unemployment benefit or a reduced earning capacity pension, separate additional-earnings rules apply. What works well from home is mostly work without fixed attendance times: AI training and data annotation, transcription, writing and translation, online tutoring or project work in your field. Roles advertised explicitly as side jobs are rare, so mini-jobs, working-student roles and freelance project work also have their own categories with us. Trustworthy offers state the company, the task and the pay transparently and never ask you for money, whether as fees, paid “starter kits” or training. Red flags are big earnings promises for little effort, payment in vouchers or cryptocurrency, requests to forward parcels or money through your account, and recruiters who only write via WhatsApp or Telegram.
