The wage tax on the payment equals the increase in your annual wage tax that the payment causes. It looks higher than on a monthly salary although it is not taxed differently from the rest of your pay: the whole payment falls into your top tax rate.

How much of a German Christmas bonus is left net?

Around 20 percent social contributions come off a Christmas bonus while you are below the contribution ceiling, plus wage tax equal to the difference between the annual wage tax with and without the payment; at 3,500 euro monthly gross in tax class I, about 1,640 euro of a 3,000 euro Christmas bonus is left in 2026.

The formula

Net bonus = bonus minus social contributions minus wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax. Wage tax = annual wage tax on (12 times monthly gross plus bonus) minus annual wage tax on 12 times monthly gross. Social contributions only up to the share of the annual contribution ceiling accrued until the month of payment.

Worked example

Example: a 3,000 EUR Christmas bonus at 3,500 EUR monthly gross. Annual wage tax rises from 4,866 EUR to 5,570 EUR, so 704 EUR wage tax falls on the payment. Add 652.50 EUR social contributions. 1,643.50 EUR remain net, which is 54.78 percent.

How a German Christmas bonus is taxed

Christmas bonus, holiday pay, annual premiums and bonuses are one-off payments (sonstige Bezüge). There is no special rate and no allowance for them. The employer works out the wage tax like this: annual wage tax on your expected annual salary plus the payment, minus annual wage tax on the salary without it. The difference is withheld.

That is why the deduction feels so high. Your basic allowance and the low tariff bands are already used up by the regular salary, so the bonus meets your full marginal rate. At 3,500 euro monthly gross in tax class I that is about 23 percent wage tax on the payment.

Solidarity surcharge on one-off payments is only due if your annual tax including the payment exceeds the 20,350 euro threshold, and then at the full 5.5 percent with no phase-in. Church tax is 8 or 9 percent of the wage tax on the payment.

You pay social contributions on the full payment as long as you are below the contribution ceiling. It is measured not per month but against the share of the annual ceiling from January to the month of payment. High earners therefore often pay less on a November Christmas bonus than on June holiday pay, because by year end either more room has built up under the ceiling or none is left.

Wage tax on one-off payments is an advance on income tax. On the tax return only the annual income counts, whether it was paid in twelve or thirteen parts.

Frequently asked questions about the Christmas bonus

Why is the Christmas bonus taxed so heavily?
It is not taxed more heavily than your salary, but entirely at your marginal rate. The regular salary already uses the basic allowance and lower bands. Add about 20 percent social contributions and, at middle incomes, often only 50 to 60 percent remains.
How much of a 1,000 euro Christmas bonus is left net?
It depends mainly on your monthly gross and tax class. At 3,500 euro monthly gross in tax class I without children or church tax, about 218 euro social contributions and about 232 euro wage tax come off, leaving roughly 550 euro. The calculator above shows your exact figure.
Is it worth changing tax class because of the Christmas bonus?
Hardly. Wage tax during the year is only an advance; the tax return settles it. A change only shifts money in time, although it can raise wage replacement benefits such as parental allowance or unemployment benefit if done early enough.
Is holiday pay taxed the same way?
Yes. Holiday pay, Christmas bonus, annual premium and bonus are all one-off payments with the same calculation. Only the contribution base can differ, because it depends on the month of payment.
Am I entitled to a Christmas bonus in Germany?
There is no statutory entitlement. It can come from your employment contract, a collective agreement, a works agreement or company practice, for example if the employer paid it without reservation for several years.
What is the March clause?
If a one-off payment made in January, February or March does not fit under the accrued contribution ceiling of the new year, it is assigned to December of the previous year for social insurance. This mainly affects high earners with spring bonuses.
