Net to Gross Calculator Germany 2026
In an interview or a salary negotiation you think in net pay, but German salaries are negotiated in gross. This calculator works backwards: enter what you want in your account each month, and it finds the gross salary that produces exactly that net, using the same wage tax calculation as our German net salary calculator.

Your desired net pay
What should reach your account after tax and social contributions, without one-off payments.
Your tax class sets the monthly wage tax and is the biggest factor in how much gross you need.
Affects church tax (8 percent in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, 9 elsewhere) and long-term care in Saxony (0.5 points more).
All children, including adults: parents pay no childless surcharge on long-term care insurance. Without children the rate is 0.6 points higher from age 23.
Only if you are a member of a church that levies church tax.
Privately insured employees pay their premium minus the employer subsidy themselves; the calculator deducts it from net like a social contribution.
Set by each insurer, 2.9 percent on average in 2026. You pay half.

Good to know
The result is the smallest gross, to the cent, whose net reaches your target. Because of the rounding in the wage tax procedure the net may end up a few cents above the target.
- Gross + employer social contributions is not the employer’s full cost: levies, accident insurance and other costs come on top. The employer cost calculator shows the complete figure.
Non-binding calculation with the official 2026 wage tax program and the 2026 social security figures for a regular monthly salary. Assumptions: aged at least 23, no one-off payments, no tax allowances registered, no factor method. Your actual annual tax is settled by your tax return. Not tax advice.

How much gross is EUR 2,500 net in Germany?
For EUR 2,500 net a month in 2026 you need about EUR 3,805 gross in tax class I (exactly EUR 3,804.79, no children or church tax, statutory health insurance with a 2.9 percent top-up). In tax class III EUR 3,293.29 is enough, in tax class V it takes EUR 4,704.15. With church tax the requirement in tax class I rises to EUR 3,887.30.
The formula
There is no direct formula from net to gross, because wage tax, the solidarity surcharge, the contribution ceilings and the midijob zone each have their own steps and rounding. The calculator therefore searches by bisection: it converts a gross figure to net with the official 2026 program, compares it with your target and halves the search range until it has found, to the cent, the smallest gross whose net reaches your target.
Worked example
Example with the defaults: for 2,500 EUR net a month you need 3,804.79 EUR gross, or 45,657.48 EUR a year. Of that, 477.25 EUR goes to wage tax, solidarity surcharge and church tax and 827.54 EUR to social contributions, together 34.29 percent of gross.

How the net to gross calculator works
Gross to net is the familiar direction: wage tax by tax class, possibly solidarity surcharge and church tax, plus the four social contributions. Backwards there is no formula you could simply rearrange. The tax scale has several zones with their own formulas, the solidarity surcharge only starts above an exemption limit, social contributions stop at two different ceilings, and the wage tax procedure rounds to whole euros or cents at several points.
The calculator solves this the way you look up a name in a phone book: it starts with a range that certainly contains the gross, converts the middle to net and discards the half that cannot contain the answer. After about 20 steps the range has shrunk to one cent. Because every step uses the same calculation as our German net salary calculator, the two calculators agree to the cent.
One point where net pay does not rise smoothly with gross is the minijob limit of EUR 603. Up to it no wage tax is due for you; one cent above it the transition zone starts with ordinary wage tax. In tax classes I to IV the net jumps up there, in V and VI it can even fall. The calculator therefore checks both sides of the limit and gives you the smallest gross that reaches your desired net.
For a salary negotiation the tax class matters: the same net costs clearly more gross in tax class V than in tax class III, even though a married couple’s annual tax is balanced out in the joint tax return. When you negotiate with an employer, talk in gross and use net only as your own planning figure.
Frequently asked questions
- How much gross is EUR 2,000 net?
- In tax class I without children or church tax, with statutory insurance and a 2.9 percent top-up, about EUR 2,904 gross a month (EUR 2,903.72). A different tax class or church tax changes the figure, so enter your own details above.
- How much gross is EUR 3,000 net?
- With the same assumptions about EUR 4,747 gross a month (EUR 4,747.17). The gap between gross and net widens as pay rises, because the tax rate is progressive.
- Why do I need so much more gross in tax class V?
- Tax class V has no basic allowance; it is counted twice for the partner in tax class III. Wage tax is therefore withheld from the first euro. A married couple gets this balanced out in the joint tax return, but month by month you need clearly more gross for the same net.
- Does the result match the net salary calculator?
- Yes. The net to gross calculator uses the same calculation and only searches for the matching gross. Enter the gross shown, with the same details, into the net salary calculator and you get your desired net, to the cent or a few cents above.
- Are 13th-month pay and holiday pay included?
- No. The calculator works with a regular monthly salary. One-off payments are taxed differently and would distort the monthly net. If you have an annual target, divide it by the number of salaries and treat the one-off payments separately.
- What does this gross cost the employer?
- More than the gross: about 21 percent employer social contributions, the U1 to U3 levies and, depending on the trade, accident insurance come on top. The employer cost calculator shows the complete figure.
